With the advent and development of new web technologies the online identity of people are getting threatened. A lot of internet users have become concerned about social media identity theft. This can be described as a variant of cyber squatting with the means of the social media sites. It is quite common to come across a social networking site member who has an identical name. While this may be a person with the same name the chances of social media identity theft can not be ruled out totally.

Problems can occur if someone takes your name and registers as a member in these sites before you apply. If the namesake wants to disrupt your life it could be a serious issue. If such a miscreant starts harassing people while using the names of others confusions can occur. They can also try to blackmail people posing as you. The social media identity thieves resort to a combination of social media and email to rob others.

The number of social media sites is only increasing with time. The popular ones are MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. The Social media websites provide the users the choice to give a user name along with the real name. To prevent the chances of online identity theft a person should use his real name both in the profile and in the information section of the sites. Of course a miscreant can use your name with dash or dot but their chances get limited significantly.

It could be hard to protect the social media identity of a person in the recent times when the hackers and malicious people have become smarter. While it can be time consuming and hard, the rewards are high. A person can give his image or CV but it would be advisable not to include his age or birthday. If you set up a free Google alert in your name you will receive an email whenever your name pops up online.

Despite of all these precautionary measures it is likely to come across a person who uses the same name in a social networking site. If that happens, waste no time and get in touch with the site’s administrators. The administrators can take steps to maintain the reputation of the site.

You may take all these steps to protect yourself from online social media identity theft. But even after that you should use Internet security software. If you choose to ignore the social identity thieves they can put you in legal and financial trouble. You can use some useful tricks to thwart identity theft. Do not keep bank statements and loan statements in open. It would be advisable to check your credit report regularly. Refrain from those websites that do not have a security certificate.

To sum up social media identity theft is becoming increasingly common. If you are apprehensive that you might be tricked and your identity can be stolen, then ensure you take the help of professionals to prevent it.

Blogging is Dead!

Hey…did you know the blogs are dead? That they have been murdered! Yes, they are no more with us… blogging is dead! Let’s observe two minutes of silence for the poor souls…

Hey just heard, the poor blogs have been replaced. Now, they are on the way of going obsolete in its true terms. Who took their place?…ahh…microblogging of course!

Microblogging…What is it?

Ohh, c’mon guys, welcome Microblogs, the new member to the world of web! The web giants like Facebook, MySpace, Orkut, and others are quite tensed of their future now. Who would want to use them now that microblogging has paved way for faster and prompter communication! Also, not to forget the attribute of reaching out to larger number of people. Well, not a bad deal after all!

Microblogging is relatively a newer concept compared to other platforms on web. It refers to small updates of maximum 140 to 150 characters that have become instantaneously popular with the bloggers. ‘Twitter’ is a living example of it, which enjoys the maximum market share followed by other microblogging platforms like Jaiku, identi.ca,Yammer, and Plurk. The most attractive feature of these microblogging sites is that they can also be updated from your mobile phones! So keep blogging while on the go! There is even more to it…

Top Features of Microblogging:

Besides being mobile compatible, there are other features to these microblogging sites, which attract more and more users to it. Let’ have a look…

Speed: Not only when you post your stuff, but also the speed with which it reaches out to the remotest corners of the world! Doesn’t matter if everyone on the network is connected to you, your message will for certain travel across the world. Thanks to features like’ Retweet’ and ‘Share’. You followers, the followers of your followers, and their followers and so on…all you have to do is keep your post interesting and it will reach people in lightning speed.
Hassle Free: All of us bloggers know, if the blog doesn’t look nice, you’re out of the race. Decide on the themes, the font, the right images….it takes more of your time than actually writing a blog! Microblogging comes hassle free…no need to change your profile theme, no worries about fonts, nothing doing with the page layout…you just keep on posting your say and that’s it!
More Fun: Just imagine getting the first hand information from live locations and situations itself! Thanks to mobile blogging, you can always be posted about the latest happenings around, even before the media is informed…and that’s the fun of it! Just imagine your friend attending your favorite rock band concert (which of course you could not make) and reporting live from there on microblogs…amazing huh!
Real-time Responses: You won’t have to login again after sometime to check out if your post has got any responses. The best part about microblogging is that, the real-time users and live bloggers are always there to read your posts, as it shows up in their timeline and comment immediately.
Challenges:

Microblogging might be fun but it can be pretty challenging to deal with your ever-growing timeline. You continuously have to monitor your timeline or wall for new posts or you just miss them! And once missed, trust me, it takes quite an effort to go back where you had left.

What Next?

Whether you too are going to go for micro-blogging as other bloggers are doing or just leave it here, I don’t know But I know, microblogging is on its way to be the next big thing with bloggers, who have already abandoned conventional blogging. . It’s upto you whether or not you want to utilize its potential.

So, now that we know the reason behind this death, the death of blogging…who would you blame…Microblogging or the Bloggers?!

So you’re learning how to use twitter and you may need some tweet ideas, right? You don’t have to tweet that you’re currently eating a bagel or that you’re about to water the plant and you don’t have to tweet links to your business all day. In order to gain followers that benefit from you and you benefit from them, you must tweet content.

Sure you can put your Twitter on automatic, but what will that do? It leaves YOU out of the equation and only causes people to not pay attention or respond to your tweets, and the entire point of Twitter is conversation not automation. You want to generate and stimulate conversation with your followers and likewise to the people you’re following. So have you been running out of ideas what to tweet or just trying to get started? Here’s some quick ideas for you:

- Blogs or Websites that have lists. Lists are extremely popular with people (you’re reading one now!) they love the quick how-tos to fix something in their lives. So find a reputable blog or website and tweet it with a good intro. For example: Top 10 Comedy Movies, 7 Ways Of Using Vinegar To Clean Carpet.

- Quotes are used A LOT. People love short, funny, and inspirational quotes. I’ve seen them turn viral. Plus you can use the hashtag #quotes to garner even more attention

- News, Pictures, Videos are best used with a great headline. I wouldn’t post news all the time though, but videos or pictures associated with related news items would provide more content than straight up news stories from CNN.

- Bookmarked sites. I have a handful of sites I visit everyday. I pick out the best articles of the day and tweet them. But I only tweet them once. Also tweeting just the articles or blog posts is a lot better than tweeting the entire site. This way your followers don’t have to pick through what’s interesting. You’re directly showing them.

- Find the hot hashtags or trends for the day right on the Twitter page. Tweet about that and join in the conversation!

- Questions. Why don’t you ask your followers some questions and generate quick conversations? You don’t want to “chat” per say, but you can quiz the hive mind of your followers. If you do want to chat with someone, take it to DMs or get another Twitter account strictly for that. You may also find other people joining in the conversation and you’ll never know.. maybe you’ll develop your own hashtag!

- Everyday life. Don’t be afraid to tweet your everyday life, but don’t make a habit out of it. If you do want to discuss what you’ve done for the day… at least include a little picture to make it more interesting.

These Twitter ideas are not intended for you to seek out to be RT’d or gain popularity. That should come naturally and not forced. So take your time, have fun, and get to tweeting!

There is one simple blog marketing tip that I know of that is very simple to implement and at the same time appears to be very effective. It is a technique that I have been constantly using which seems to be significantly increasing the number of times that people socially bookmark my blog posts. You see, people are in the habit of placing icons on their blogs and websites that allow people to bookmark the content through different social bookmarking websites such as Delicious, Furl, Yahoo Bookmarks, etc. Needless to say, this is a really great idea! The more your blog and/or website is bookmarked, the more exposure your business will get across the web.

Now, just the simple act of placing those icons doesn’t mean that people will go ahead and bookmark your site. Your chances are a lot higher with those icons, but it still takes someone a little bit of effort to go ahead and decide to bookmark your website. But what I have seen some people do on their blogs to increase bookmarking is probably the most effective thing discussed thus far!

So what have a select few been doing? Well, people have been using the “magic words” in order to increase bookmarking. Most of the time, this doesn’t even come through an elaborate use of these magic words. Sometimes I will see people simply say “Please Bookmark,” and then supply the icons at the end of the blog post. Now, most people wouldn’t find these words particularly interesting, but the first time I saw somebody do this it reminded me of an effective technique that people use in video marketing.

You see, in video marketing a lot of people will ask people at the end of their videos to simply rank, comment, or share the video with other people. It is not odd to see a video with this type of request to have 1 out of 30 viewers rank the video. When comparing these numbers to videos that don’t ask you to rank, comment, or share the video, many of these videos struggle to get 1 out of 200 people to rank the video, and it may sound silly of me to suggest this, but I think the reason why is that people are a lot more likely to rank a video if you simply just ask them to do so!

So, what does this mean for a blog or website? Yes folks! I am suggesting that if you simply ask people kindly to bookmark your blog, then they will be a whole lot more likely to do it than if you had just provided them with the social bookmarking links.

Now, my hypothesis is that if your blog post has some really great content, and THEN you ask them to bookmark your page, you will probably have the highest chances of people bookmarking your webpage. I believe that if people feel like that you provided them with that great content, then they might even feel like that they owe you the favor to simply bookmark your webpage. And if you get enough people to do this, then you will get even more and more free traffic to your website. And it will all be because you remembered to say the magic words!

As we all know, Twitter is great for social interaction with people around the world, but as a tool for your business…it’s invaluable. Twitter is being used more and more for marketing your business, but it’s more than just marketing. It’s for making deeper connections for you and your business. You can also promote products on there through affiliate marketing, or getting people to tweet your website or product or even have them retweet it.

You can tweet your blog posts, you can tweet specials you’re having on your website, you can tweet affiliate programs to earn money, and you can interact with your customers (very important in relationship building). Using Twitter in your business endeavors is one of the great ways to establish yourself as an expert in your field. You can not only tell others about your website…but you can (and should) also give little nuggets of information or wisdom.

Once you have established yourself as a good Twitterer then people will respond to your tweet, they may even look forward to it because they enjoy that interaction with you or you provide such great content that they can use it for their day, retweet it to their followers, or just have a conversation with you.

Giving quality tweets to your followers is of the utmost importance. When you provide quality tweets, the likelihood of your followers RT’ing (Re-Tweeting) you is high, which in turn will provide more followers for you if others find you valuable.

You can also host a Tweetup with other people in a local area and this type of event brings people together and lumps everyone’s followers together as well. In this setting you have access to other people’s followers because they’re tweeting about you and you’re tweeting about them. A Tweet up is a physical event where everyone (usually locally) gets together and tweets! It’s a great way to get a lot of new followers and lots of attention to your name!

To show that you’re really contributing to Twitter, you should reply to people you follow, RT (re-tweet) their interesting posts, and have conversations with other people. You want to show that you’re not a robot or someone who only wants to toot their own horn. You want to connect with others. You could always set up auto-tweets about your business or affiliate links at night and during the day have real conversations with people. Twitter is a great communication and relationship tool.

Tweet your business and yourself, and both will grow!

Provide value to the twitter community, and you’ll see much faster success!

Ok ladies and gentlemen…It’s time for a crash course into Twitter lingo. Whenever your become part of a “community” it’s very important to understand the language that is used by the members of the community. The terms listed below will be the ones you primarily use in your day-to-day twitter activities.

@username – This shows that you are replying or directing a message to that specific person on Twitter. You’ll use this one the most. People love personal interaction and doing this often will help you stand out in the minds of others!

RT @username – When you really like a Tweet you may want to send it to your followers as well, so you RT (Re-Tweet) and then give the originator of the tweet the credit that they rightfully deserve. So…when you see a tweet that someone else posted (that you like) then simple use the following protocol.  “RT @username (the tweet they posted)”

#topic – The pound sign indicates what is known as a hashtag. It’s used to follow a group of people on a specific topic via keyword, such as a news item, local event (such as a seminar), or like interests. The most popular example of this is #followfriday This is where you tell your followers about people you really enjoy following. Be sure to check out #followfriday as you’ll be sure to meet some wonderful people!

DM – This is a “Direct Message” to a person. No one else can read this except you and the person you DM’d. Think of it like sending a personal e-mail to and individual. Use DM’s when you don’t want anyone else in the twitter community (except the person you’re talking to) to be included in the conversation

Tinyurl.com or Bit.ly – These are URL converters from long URLs to short ones. Let’s pretend that you want tell other tweeters about your website, but the url is something really long like: http://www.ReallyLongUrl.com.  You can use Tinyurl.com and bit.ly to shorten the url you’re promoting so that you can stay within the 140 character limit that twitter requires. These 2 free services will be your best friends with regard to promoting other websites. I personally suggest using bit.ly because you can track clicks.

Tweetup – This is when local people meet in one place and Twitter the event. This is a way of meeting other Twitters face to face and also combining Tweeple forces. If you want to be well respected in the twitter community, I suggest finding other people local to your area and doing a tweet up

Tweeple – Just another word for Twitter members.

Twitterholic – Someone who’s addicted to Twitter. This could be you.

Especially in a volatile economy, whether you are looking for your next client or a new job, it’s not what you know but who you know that makes the difference. I got my last client through a recent referral. Although what I knew mattered, who I knew had a much greater impact.

Online social networks provide an easy way to build a community of trusted contacts. The backbone of social interaction on these sites is based on individual profiles that you compile, including your interests, capabilities, and a list of contacts with which you share connections.

So in establishing your online network, go with those you know. Reach out to clients, colleagues in your industry, former classmates and coworkers. Knowing your contacts makes it easier to leverage your network and ask specific contacts for advice or for tips on how to get your foot in a new door.

Since these people know you, they are more likely to provide a reference or to understand if an opportunity they know of may be a good match for your qualifications. Whether you have an account on Facebook or LinkedIn, it’s a good idea to manage your social network accounts strategically. Here are ten tips to help you showcase your strengths and maximize your professional visibility:

Compose your profile with a professional focus in mind; include past companies you have worked for or businesses you have owned, your education, and any professional affiliations. Doing so will expand your opportunities and ability to connect with others. Don’t post anything online that you are not comfortable exposing to the public. If your profile is public, everything you post is fair game. Add keyword-rich descriptions to your profile, so it can be found by search engines. Build your network continuously by connecting with others. More connections potentially mean more opportunities. Leverage your expertise by listing helpful tips or advice. By doing this you will demonstrate the value you can provide to others. Give and get recommendations. Third party accounts carry a lot of weight and are instrumental in a viewer’s decision process. Only connect with those you know and trust. These are the folks who are best able to recommend your products or services and you are a good candidate to reciprocate on their behalf. Include links to your website and blog. These links add more depth and interest to your profile. Add a slide presentation to your profile using Slideshare, Google Presentations or a similar application. Use the presentation creatively to highlight an upcoming event or recent accomplishments. Join groups, participate in discussions, and ask/answer questions. Doing these things will assist your online community in understanding who you are and the value you can bring to the table.

There are numerous social networking sites to choose from. However LinkedIn is the standard in terms of professional online networking. Many companies actively recruit employment candidates from LinkedIn, including Microsoft, Ebay, and Target.

Twitter Marketing

As you know, Twitter is an online social community service called microblogging, which lets you broadcast short messages and updates to those on your list, also known as “followers”. Each time you post a message, everyone who follows you, receives this message.

Twitter social network is very simple and easy to join and get involved, even if you had success with other social networks. In fact, one of the most common questions we have received from those who want to do a marketing campaign on Twitter is: “What is so special about Twitter?”

Indeed, at first sight Twitter seems to be something basic, compared with other communities of microblogging. In fact, its simplistic interface that can give even an impression that the functionality and characteristics are quite limited.

But Twitter is not only the most popular microblogging network, but really makes some waves, which very few social networks can rival . Because of the Twitter popularity, appeared dozens of such communities that competing for a better place on the social networking scene;only a few have managed to generate so much interest to remain online.

Whatever is the reason, Twitter is the most powerful, active and recognized existing microblogging network right now, and if you do not fully use his popularity to build your business online, you lose the train.

Only by focusing on the building of a relevant basis for “followers” and being active in the twitter community, you can easily build your email list, you can pre-launch products and promote existing products and even search the market, all this, faster and easier than with any other online method.

Twitter offers an incredible method of direct connection with the potential clients of a business. You can channel traffic to any site you want, and even if you are a beginner in online marketing and you haven’t  a strong presence on the internet yet, Twitter is an exceptional internet marketing tool that helps you grow and develop the credibility in the market, of your online business brand.

Twitter helped me enormously in the building of relationships with my clients and potential online business partners. It is an extremely powerful tool that you can improve and expand your online business in an incredible way, even if your time dedicated to social media is limited.

So, if I raised your interest and you do not have an account on Twitter, you can sign up here

Since Twitter came online to boost the popularity of microblogging along with other social networks that already had “status update” forms of microblogging incorporated into their systems, the art of minute messages has taken cyberspace by storm. A danger with so many popular forms of communication becoming the favored method of contact is that users are often signed on to more than one, if not all of the available systems. Creating unique “what are you doing at the moment” type posts for each one is more time consuming than the principle behind quick updates mandates—and defeats the purpose. So in an effort to keep all of their lines of communication active many users cross-post messages on each of the platforms. There are pros and cons to cross posting on various microblogs. The pro is that it does indeed save time and is likely to get the most coverage to all of the people in your network. The hope is that if your chosen platforms are, for instance, Twitter, MySpace and Facebook you will contact each of your followers even if they are only following you on one or two of your networks. The biggest con to the method of cross posting on microblogs is that it most of your followers are also very likely to be following you on all of your platforms and those that aren’t are a very small percentage, so you are essentially spamming your followers repeatedly on several different systems. Add to that the tendency for followers to repeat the post to their followers on all of the same platforms, and whose followers are likely to be following the original poster as well, and cross posting on microblogs can create quite a system clogging effect. Adding to the confusion and belief that cross microblogging is acceptable and even desired are the many programs popping up designed to automatically cross post you blogs on each of your networks with a single click of the mouse. Those with messages and products to sell often use the microblogging system to instantly post links to websites, product pages, or ad copy and make use, both good and bad of cross posting to get the widest coverage. Because of the socially connected nature of microblogs and social networks this amounts to instant spamming when done indiscriminately. There are acceptable ways to promote services and products using microblogs, but if you want to avoid angering your followers, or having your account suspended cross posting should be avoided. At the very least cross posting can leave your followers board. After all they are getting the same message from you on a variety of different networks. Spice it up a little and take a few minutes to create original content for each post even if it to promote the same product or service. Microblogging is short and sweet and each post shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to create. If you aren’t promoting something then try posting unique messages to each network at different times so it isn’t as time consuming for yourself or as tedious for your friends.
